Cumberland Island slide show (30) The Cumberland Island was bought by Thomas Carnegie per his wife, Lucy Coleman's desire, in 1881. Initially developed into his family's Estate, and remained until 1972. When Thomas passed away and his brother, Andrew, sold his steel industry in Pittsburgh, his wife continued to manage the ownership of the island and provided financial support for the Carnegie children to live there, their whole lives. The estate has slowly become ruins and the island is a very undeveloped barrier island on the Atlantic coast, which is extremely unique. A lot of wild animals on the island.
